Welcome to Heritage Dance!

Heritage dance began in 2012 in response to a request by people who wished to learn the dances for the Heritage Ball held every year as part of the Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations in November. Originally just meeting once a week for about 6 weeks before the Ball and then holding a practice on the morning of the Ball, it has grown and meets usually twice a month during the year and then for the 10 weeks before the Heritage Ball in November.

It is open to everyone whether they have danced before or are complete beginners. There is no joining fee, just a small contribution towards the hire of the hall and a cup of tea (presently $3 per person per session).

As the group has grown, the dance repertoire has also changed. Now dances that are popular at the local Saturday night dances are practiced especially just before the “Ball” season which starts in June with our MidWinter Ball and encompasses the Balls held by North Otago Scottish Society, Dunedin Scottish Society and other dances held around the area. During this time more modern dances are practiced and then we go back to the Victorian era for the Heritage Ball practices.
